UPBA Code of Ethics
Section 1: The Association
A. Membership in the United Poodle Breeds Association assumes acceptance of and adherence to this code, to the UKC Breeder's Code of Ethics, and to the UKC Kennel Requirements for Owners of UKC Registered Dogs.
B. We are dedicated to having an Association which operates in a democratic and open manner for the good of the breed and not for the sake of any individual or group of people.
C. All members are encouraged to partake in discussions and decisions, either in writing, by electronic mail, or in person at meetings.
D. Enforcement of this Code of Ethics is as enumerated in Article IX of the bylaws.
Section 2: The Poodle and Standard Poodle Breeds
A. We, the members of the United Poodle Breeds Association, are dedicated to the preservation of the Poodle and Standard Poodle as happy, healthy retrievers and companions, who display sound temperament and conformation.
B. We are dedicated to preserving the intelligence and versatility of these breeds by breeding dogs who can excel in and enjoy performance events, and by providing, to the best of our ability, appropriate opportunities for our dogs to participate in performance events.
C. We will at all times act in the interest of the Poodle and Standard Poodle breeds, and in the interest of the well being of individual dogs, and in a manner in keeping with the interests of the United Poodle Breeds Association.
Section 3: Management, Breeding and Sales of Poodles and Standard Poodles
A. We will keep our dogs in an environment and under a regime (including proper hygiene and coat care) that, as far as is possible, ensure their physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
B. Members will breed bitches and provide stud service only when they are confident that the time and facilities to devote proper care and attention to the physical, mental, and emotional development of the puppies, and to the well-being of the dam, are available.
C. No member will knowingly sell a Poodle or Standard Poodle of any age to any pet shop, catalogue house, laboratory, or wholesale dealer in dogs, or to any person who sells to pet shops, catalogue houses, laboratories, or wholesale dealers (a dealer being a person who regularly buys stock for sale at profit). No member will in any way knowingly aid or abet the sale of any Poodle or Standard Poodle through a pet shop or catalogue house. Members will not knowingly offer stud service to wholesale dealers or to any person involved with pet shops, catalogue houses, or laboratories.
D. All warranties and other agreements pertaining to the sale of a Poodle or Standard Poodle will be put in writing, with a copy to the buyer.
E. A member selling a dog which has a disqualifying fault, or unsound temperament, or a physical condition which indicates that the breeding of the animal would be detrimental to the breed, shall so inform the buyer in writing. The sale shall be made with agreements in writing, signed by both buyer and seller, that the dog is not to be bred and will be spayed or neutered.
F. Breeder members will be thoroughly familiar with the UKC Standard of their breed, and all breedings will be planned with consideration given to health, soundness, temperament, and type. Breeder members will take all reasonable measures to produce puppies that are physically healthy and temperamentally sound, including doing that phenotypic and genotypic testing which is generally accepted as effective in identifying conditions believed to be hereditary.
G. No dog exhibiting a hereditary health defect, unsound temperament, or poor health will be bred, except as a test breeding to determine the genetic composition of the mate. Any puppies resulting from test breedings for hereditary defects will be placed as in Paragraph 3E, unless the puppy is placed for the purpose of test breeding only.
H. If a dog or bitch has produced offspring with a serious defect or genetically transmitted disease, the owner must disclose the information to prospective breeders or stud owners when negotiating breedings.
I. A bitch should be mated no more than two out of three successive seasons (assuming that litters result) and never without due regard for the health and well-being of the bitch.
Section 4: Dog Training and Events
A. Members will use humane training methods at all times.
B. Exhibition by members will be strictly in accordance with UKC rules. Members' Poodles and Standard Poodles will always compete unassisted by any substance, device, or practice used to enhance the performance or change the nature of a dog in competition.
C. Competition in performance events is strongly encouraged as a means of demonstrating the talents and versatility of Poodles and Standard Poodles.
D. Members' Poodles and Standard Poodles will always be shown with clean natural coats unaffected by dye, hair spray, or any other substance applied externally which changes the quantity, quality, appearance, type, or texture of the dog's own natural coat or skin.
E. Members will exhibit good sportsmanship at all UKC events and will treat other people with courtesy and respect at all times. Members will refrain from knowingly making defamatory, slanderous, unfair, or untrue statements about the dogs or practices of others and about other persons.
